In the story given below, there was a King and Queen who have nine daughters. The queen finds it confusing to remember her daughter’s name. Thus, the father decided to give the names of months to each princess. So, they named their youngest daughter September.
The king had a habit of gifting their daughters on their birthdays. Once he gave a green parrot in a golden cage to each of his daughters. The princesses were elated and spend most of their time with them.
The parrot used to say God save the King and Pretty Polly in seven languages. One sad morning September found her parrot dead and she felt gloomy all day. The maids ignored her and she remained weeping in the depths of despair. Then she saw a little bird that sang about the King’s garden, the willows, and the goldfish.
The bird asked her if she would keep her in the palace. although the bird was not pretty, September clapped her hands and the bird started singing. The princess fell asleep. She fed the bird and was delighted to take him to her parents. The king was also impressed by her singing.
The other princesses were jealous of her and told her to buy a parrot but she was not interested. They all told her to keep the bird in a cage as she flies every time here and there. Someday it may not return. She was also worried and so she put the singing bird into a cage.
The bird asked her to open the cage, but the princess refused. Princess September asked her to sing but she refused. the bird wanted to see trees, the river, etc. It did not eat anything and remained sad.
The next day the bird told the princess that if she does not set her free she would die. The Princess set the bird free and kept her palace window open to let her come in and out anytime. Princess September was very beautiful and got happily married to the King of Cambodia. Her sisters were ugly and all of them got married to the King’s Councillors.
