The story given below is a very heart-wrenching story taken as an extract from The popular fiction ‘The Yearling’ written by Marjorie Rawling. The chapter deals with a little kid Jody and his emotional journey. The boy has a very pure heart which makes him virtuous and sensitive.
One day a rattlesnake bites his father and to save him he kills doe so he could use his heart to save him. He saves his father but the fawn is left all alone without his mother. Whenever he thinks about that little fawn, he becomes sad and helpless. He then decided to bring him home.
His father also behaves sensibly and told him that now it is his responsibility to take care of that fawn. But they also want their mother’s permission to keep that fawn with them. Jody’s mother was also surprised about what she heard but she also could not resist leaving him alone.
Dr. Wilson also persuaded his mother and Mill-Wheel also interfere in their decision. The mother now wants to keep the fawn only on one condition. Jody promises to give his share of milk to the fawn. Jody nodded in affirming and with his father he went to the forest to find the fawn to keep it.
Finally, the fawn is brought home and is looked after by Jody. So, a young boy with a golden heart and beautiful soul can bring a positive change in someone’s life.

Question – 1 What had happened to Jody’s father?
Jody’s family lived in the forests. When Jody’s father was crossing the forests, he was got bitten by a rattlesnake. Jody saved his father’s life with the help of the liver and the heart of the doe they killed.
Question 2: How did the doe save Penny’s life?
Jody’s father, Penny was bitten by a rattlesnake when we were walking in the forest. Because they lived in the forest, there was no doctor, so they had to rely on the natural cure available in the forest. So, they killed a doe. Jody used the heart and the liver of the doe to draw out the poison to save his father.
Question 3: Why does Jody want to bring the fawn home?
Jody knew that after the death of the doe, the fawn will be left alone to starve. Jody knew the doe, fawn’s mother used to feed him. Firstly, he thought if the fawn was found dead or could not be found, then he did not want to expose his disappointment in front of Mill. Secondly, if Jody finds the fawn, he didn’t want Mill-Wheel to see his emotions and love for the fawn.

Mill-Wheel was afraid to leave Jody alone in the forest because it could be dangerous for him. The mill wheel was worried about his safety and his being lost in the forest as Jody was a little kid. Also, Jody’s father was bitten by a rattlesnake the day before, so he was already worried.
