The Adventures Of Toto is a humorous story by Ruskin Bond focussing on the pranks of the mischievous monkey. The narrator’s grandfather was very fond of animals but usually hid them from his grandmother. He bought toto for rs 5 from a tonga driver as he had already all types of animals from big to small, from tortoise to goat. He wanted toto as he loved him very much. But very soon he grew very mischievous and created problems for everyone. So, grandfather sold it again to the tonga driver.

The author’s Grandfather was very fond of animals and had a nice collection. He had animals from a pair of squirrels to a big tortoise. But he didn’t have a monkey, so one day he bought one for 5rs from a tonga driver. He named him Toto as he enriched his private zoo.
Toto was an attractive red-colored monkey with pearly white teeth and sparkling eyes. His tail was like his third hand and added to his looks. He was very mischievous and felt good to scare away the Anglo-Indian ladies. Grandmother never welcomed any animal so she never took any interest whenever a new animal or any bird came into the house.
So, Grandfather along with the author decided to hide Toto until Grandmother was in a good mood to accept another new member. Toto was kept in a little closet in the narrator’s bedroom wall with a rope fastened to the wall.
Toto was very mischievous from the very first day and started creating a nuisance. He pulled out the peg and tore off the blazer and the wallpaper. Grandfather was very happy to see that he is active.
Now, grandfather transferred toto into a big cage in the servant’s quarter. But Toto did not adjust to the other animals and his pranks increased every day. One day, Grandfather had to go to Saharanpur and he decided to carry him in a big canvas bag that does not have any opening. He would roll the bag on the Dehradun Railway Platform as the bag does not have any opening.
On reaching Saharanpur, the TC caught hold of Toto and categorised him as a dog and charged for his fare. Finally, one day grandmother accepted Toto and shifted to a stable where Nana lived on their family donkey. But they could never become friends and Toto used to tease him.
Toto loved bathing in hot water in the winter season. One day, he was nearly about boiling himself but soon grandmother came to her rescue. Tot continued with her pranks and tore many clothes, and broke plates and cutlery. Everyone got tired of his pranks and grandfather decided to sell it back to the tonga driver for 3rs.
