1. James Evan
He was known as a kleptomaniac who has escaped thrice from various prisons but now a prisoner at HM Prison Oxford, which is guarded by the governor. He was known to all for his teasing attitude and his amicable relations with the officers. While at the prison, he takes night classes in o-level german language and very soon after 6 months he is going to take the final exam.
2. Jackson
He was the senior officer at the same prison and displays his war accolades on his jacket’s pocket. He and Evan share animosity. Though he sometimes pokes fun at Evan but wished him good luck also. He showed empathy but also exchange gruff against him.
3. Reverend Stuart Mcleery
He was a clergyman at St. Mary Mags, is sent to Oxford prison as a proctor for Evan’s o-level exam. He is short and stout with a choppy haircut wore a clerical shirt with a long coat and glasses. Initially, he appears to be patient but losses his temper when Jackson was in quest for his briefcase and interrogates him. Reader’s will get a glimpse at the end of the story only.

He is newly appointed as an officer at Oxford Prison and supposed to sit while Evans is giving his exam. He is short-tempered and has been ordered to report if anything looks fishy. The governor is the protagonist of the story and is a proud man and wants to outwit Evans and keep the prisoner locked so that he could not get out. He supervised the prisoner through a receiver so that he feels safe and the situation remains under control. He wants to redeem his obligations and doesn’t want that Evans escape this time.

The story starts with a telephonic conversation in early March for the preparation of an examination center for Evans so he started preparing for the o-level examination. The prisoner cell of Evans was made examination center and churchmen from St Mary Mags to work as an invigilator. The governor did not tell anybody about Evans’s escape from the prison and took personal interest to see that Evans could not elude this time as now obligations are on the governor to prove himself.
Jackson and Stephen examined the prison thoroughly and ordered Stephen to take all the stuff which can be used as a weapon to unlock the cell. They also placed a microphone in the cell. On examination day, the parson was assisted by Stephen and the governor ordered the officers to remove the paper knife as well but Jackson found a semi-filled tube in the parson’s bag.
But when asked to remove it, Mcleery said he had to use it as he suffered from hemorrhoids. A receiver was also placed in his cell so that the whole process could be heard and he was sure about his arrangements. Stephen in every minute took a sneak peek and after some time he noticed that Evans is wrapping a blanket around himself but he ignored it as it was cold outside.
Later on, Stephens accompanied Mclerry and seems happy but still for having a final look he again peeped inside the cell and was flabbergasted to see that Mcleery lying in a pool of blood. And the news spread like fire in the jungle that Evans tries to escape once again. Mcleery told that a photocopy of the escape plan has been placed instead of the question paper and found that news would reach New Bury
Soon they all were sent to catch him up and both Jackson and Stephen were reprimanded for being unaware of the false beard of Evans and ordered to go to St. Aldates Police Station to inform that Evans escaped this time also. The governor called up to the Radcliffe Hospital and came to know that Mcleery who was helping them was himself, Evans.
As soon as he reached the hotel room to enjoy his freedom, he was surrounded by a group of men along with the governor in his room. The governor asked him about his plans to escape from the clutches of police the fourth time, he told everything.
Finally, a van was called to take Evans, the governor was feeling proud of fulfilling his duty and maintain his name but at the eleventh hour, the prison officer unlocked him and drive very fast so that Evans could not be caught again and for the fourth time also he managed to escape from their clutches.
